Puppy E-Collar Introduction: Starting Right

Puppies can start e-collar conditioning early — not for corrections, but for building a positive association. This tutorial shows you how to introduce the e-collar to a puppy so they grow up loving it, setting the stage for a lifetime of clear communication.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

When to Start

You can begin e-collar familiarization with a puppy as young as 12-16 weeks, AFTER they've started marker training and understand basic commands (sit, name, recall). The goal at this age is purely positive association — no pressure, no corrections.

Pro Tip: The puppy should already be comfortable with a flat collar and slip leash before introducing the e-collar. One new thing at a time.

2

Collar On = Fun Begins

Put the e-collar on your puppy (turned OFF) right before meals, play sessions, and walks. Take it off when the fun stops. Within a week, your puppy will get excited when you reach for the collar — because it means good things are about to happen.

Pro Tip: Never use the e-collar for any correction with a puppy under 6 months. This phase is 100% about building love for the equipment.

3

Turn It On: Find the Puppy Level

With your puppy at rest, turn the e-collar on and slowly increase the level. A puppy's working level is VERY low — look for an ear twitch or slight head turn. Puppies are more sensitive than adult dogs, so start lower than you think.

Pro Tip: If your puppy shows any sign of stress (yawning, lip licking, trying to move away), you're too high. Drop the level immediately.

4

Pair Stim with Food (Puppy Style)

Press the button at the puppy's working level for 1 second, then immediately give a treat. Repeat 10-15 times per session, 2-3 sessions per day. The puppy learns: that gentle feeling = treat is coming. They'll start looking toward you when they feel it.

Pro Tip: Keep sessions short — 3-5 minutes max. Puppies have short attention spans. End before they lose focus.

5

Stim = Come to Me

Once the puppy loves the stim-feeling, use it for recall. Press the button, say their name, and when they come to you, release the button and give a treat. The puppy learns: that feeling means 'find my human.' This is the foundation of a lifelong reliable recall.

Pro Tip: Always release the button the moment the puppy starts moving toward you. The release IS the reward — it tells them they did the right thing.

6

Build the Gas Pedal, Save the Brakes

For the first 6-12 months, only use the e-collar as a gas pedal — low-level continuous stim to encourage behaviors. Save the 'brakes' (corrections) for when the puppy is older and has a solid understanding of all commands. The goal is a dog that loves the e-collar and sees it as a communication tool, not a punishment.

Pro Tip: A puppy that grows up loving their e-collar becomes an adult dog with off-leash freedom and reliability. Start right, and the rest is easy.
