Heel on Leash — Building the Foundation
Learn how to build a precise, beautiful heel position from scratch using marker training. Your dog will learn to walk glued to your left side with attention and drive.
Step-by-Step Guide
Define Heel Position
Heel position means your dog's shoulder is aligned with your left leg, their body is parallel to yours, and they're looking up at you. Hold a treat at your left hip to show your dog exactly where you want them.
Pro Tip: Don't start moving yet — get your dog comfortable standing in position first.
Mark & Reward the Position
With your dog in heel position at your left side, mark ('Yes!') and reward from your left hand at hip height. Repeat 15-20 times in place until they're magnetized to that spot.
Pro Tip: Always deliver the reward at your hip — this teaches them where to look for the reward and reinforces the correct position.
One Step at a Time
Take one step forward, mark the instant your dog stays in position beside you, and reward. Then try two steps, then three. Build up gradually over multiple sessions.
Pro Tip: If your dog forges ahead or lags behind, stop and reset. Never drag them back into position.
Add Attention (the 'Watch')
Start rewarding specifically when your dog looks up at your face while in heel position. This is the difference between a dog that's just next to you and a dog with true heel engagement.
Pro Tip: Use a higher-value treat when you catch eye contact — make it feel like a jackpot.
Introduce the Verbal Cue
Say 'Heel' just before you take your first step. After many repetitions, your dog will automatically move into position and walk with you when they hear the word.
Pro Tip: Only say 'Heel' once per start — repetition dilutes the cue.
Leash Mechanics
The leash should be loose — a J-shape, never tight. If it tightens, stop walking immediately. Wait for your dog to return to position, then continue. The leash is a safety net, not a steering wheel.
Pro Tip: Hold the leash in your right hand with slack so corrections are clear and distinct from normal walking.
