Crate Training Your Puppy

Make the crate your puppy's favorite place with this positive, stress-free approach.

15 min4 steps

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Introduce the Crate

Place the crate in a common area with the door open. Toss treats inside and let your puppy explore freely. No closing the door yet.

Pro Tip: Put a comfy bed and a worn t-shirt of yours inside.

2

Feed Meals Inside

Start feeding all meals in the crate. Place the bowl at the back so they have to go all the way in.

Pro Tip: Leave the door open during meals for the first few days.

3

Short Door Closures

After they're eating comfortably, close the door while they eat. Open it the moment they finish. Gradually extend the time.

Pro Tip: If they whine, wait for 2 seconds of quiet before opening — never open on a whine.

4

Build Duration

Work up to 10 minutes, then 30, then an hour. Always provide a frozen Kong or chew to make crate time enjoyable.

Pro Tip: Puppies under 4 months shouldn't be crated more than 3-4 hours.
