Step-by-Step Guide
Name Game
Say your dog's name — when they look at you, mark and reward. Do this 50+ times in different locations.
Pro Tip: Never use their name for anything negative.
Restrained Recalls
Have someone hold your dog. Walk away, call them excitedly. When released, they sprint to you — mark and throw a party with treats and praise.
Pro Tip: Make coming to you the best thing that ever happens.
Add Distractions Slowly
Practice in the yard, then at a park on a long line. Only call when you're fairly confident they'll come.
Pro Tip: Use a 30-foot long line for safety — never practice off-leash until it's reliable on-leash.
Never Poison the Cue
Never call your dog to you for something they don't like (bath, nail trim, leaving the park). Go get them instead.
Pro Tip: Coming when called = amazing things happen. Always.
