Teach Your Dog to Sit
A complete guide to teaching a reliable sit using luring, marking, and proofing techniques.
Step-by-Step Guide
The Lure
Hold a treat at your dog's nose level. Slowly move it up and slightly back over their head. As their nose follows up, their rear naturally goes down.
Pro Tip: Keep the treat close to the nose — too far away and they'll jump.
Mark & Reward
The instant your dog's rear touches the ground, mark with 'Yes!' or a click, then deliver the treat.
Pro Tip: Don't push their rear down — let them figure it out.
Fade the Lure
After 10-15 successful reps, use the same hand motion but without a treat in your hand. Mark and reward from your other hand or pocket.
Pro Tip: The hand signal becomes your visual cue.
Add the Verbal Cue
Once reliable, say 'Sit' just before the hand signal. Over time, your dog will respond to the word alone.
Pro Tip: Only say the cue once — repeating it teaches your dog to ignore it.
Proof the Behavior
Practice in different locations, with different distractions. Increase difficulty gradually — new rooms, the yard, then public spaces.
Pro Tip: If your dog fails more than 2 out of 5 reps, make it easier.
