Marker Training Foundations
Learn the fundamentals of marker training — charge your marker, build drive, and create clear communication with your dog.
Step-by-Step Guide
Choose Your Marker
Select a clicker or verbal marker like 'Yes!' that you'll use consistently. The marker bridges the gap between the behavior and the reward.
Pro Tip: A clicker is more precise than a verbal marker for beginners.
Charge the Marker
Click (or say your marker) and immediately deliver a high-value treat. Repeat 20-30 times until your dog's ears perk up at the sound.
Pro Tip: Use small, soft treats your dog loves — cheese, hot dogs, or liver work great.
Mark Real Behaviors
Start marking simple voluntary behaviors like eye contact or sitting. Click the INSTANT the behavior happens, then reward.
Pro Tip: Timing is everything — mark during the behavior, not after.
Build the Pattern
Practice in short 3-5 minute sessions throughout the day. Your dog should now visibly anticipate a reward after hearing the marker.
Pro Tip: End sessions on a high note while your dog is still engaged.
